Douglas Detrick, Glass Stories
Glass Stories is a collection of two short stories, two songs, and photographs inspired by the fragility, adaptability, and resiliency of glass. The project makes connections across boundaries of history, fiction, and music, with the mythical and physical presence of glass as an inspiration. The songs explore bad luck, self-doubt, and the struggle to fight against powerful, oppressive forces while still retaining one’s dignity.

new focus recordings
A group of distiniguished Yale composer alumni (Carl Schimmel, Orianna Webb, Armando Bayolo, Adam B. Silverman and Daniel Kellogg) undertook a charming and ambitious project to write a series of works inspired by their collective experiences as new parents of young children. The resulting works for flute, viola, and harp, performed by Trio Kavak, not only represent major new additions to this elegant instrumentation, but also reflect an attractive range of stylistic approaches to capturing this seminal life experience in music.
RICHARD REED PARRY, MUSIC FOR HEART AND BREATH
deutsche grammophon
Richard Reed Parry · Nico Muhly · Bryce Dessner · Aaron Dessner · yMusic · Kronos Quartet a.o.
“ . . . his debut as a neo-classical composer proves to be extraordinarily enthralling and deceptively intricate. The music arose from a fascinating concept -- having the musicians play in time to their heartbeats or breathing. Within an ensemble, you might imagine that the result would be chaotic and cacophonous. In fact, the opposite is true. Parry's music throughout is immersive and profoundly soothing.”

songs from the Rainshadow’s edge
Redshift records
Songs from the Rainshadow’s Edge is Redshift Records’ first EP, dedicated entirely to the music of Benton Roark. This five part song cycle is lushly orchestrated and features the shimmering vocals of Canadian soprano Kathleen Allan. Roark acts as his own librettist, exploring the dark and complex theme of depersonalization with results that vary from whimsical to haunting. Songs from the Rainshadow’s Edge is also the debut recording of Arkora, a Toronto-New York collective dedicated to contemporary vocal chamber music. Co-founded by Allan and Roark, Arkora boasts a dazzling roster of young professionals from both sides of the border.
